Key Points for Piston Maintenance: Crucial Measures to Prolong Service Life

2025 10/16

The good condition of a piston depends on scientific maintenance. Daily maintenance should focus on the following three points:

First, choose the right engine oil and change it regularly. Engine oil not only provides a heat dissipation medium for the cooling oil passage of the piston but also lubricates the mating surfaces between the piston and the cylinder wall and the piston rings. Poor-quality engine oil or oil that has been used beyond its expiration date can lead to lubrication failure and accelerate piston wear. It is recommended to select engine oil of API SN grade or higher and with matching viscosity (such as 5W-30, which is commonly used in turbocharged engines) based on the engine model. For ordinary family cars, the oil should be changed every 5,000 to 7,500 kilometers. Under harsh conditions (such as frequent short trips or high-temperature environments), the oil change interval should be shortened.

Second, regularly inspect the working conditions of the pistons. Use an engine fault diagnostic tool to check the working temperature of the pistons and the frequency of detonation. If the temperature abnormally rises (by more than 20℃ above the normal range), it is necessary to check whether the cooling oil passage is blocked. During vehicle maintenance, check if there are metal debris in the engine oil (which can be done with an oil test paper or professional detection). If there is a large amount of debris, it may indicate wear on the piston skirt or ring groove, and timely repair is required. Additionally, pay attention to whether the engine power decreases or the fuel consumption suddenly increases, as these could be signs of a decline in the sealing performance of the pistons.

Thirdly, avoid improper operations that may damage the pistons. After starting the vehicle when it is cold, do not immediately drive at high speed. Wait until the engine temperature rises to the normal range (the water temperature gauge reaches above 80℃) to reduce the stress damage to the pistons caused by uneven heating and cooling. Avoid prolonged operation under excessive load (such as fully loaded uphill driving or sudden acceleration at high speed) to prevent the pistons from deforming due to excessive explosion pressure. When refueling, choose qualified fuel from regular gas stations. Inferior fuel, when incompletely burned, will produce carbon deposits that adhere to the top of the pistons, affecting heat dissipation and combustion efficiency. Over time, this may lead to erosion of the piston top.

In terms of industry trends, pistons for hybrid vehicles need to be fatigue-resistant, and the lifespan of dedicated pistons has been increased by 40%. The research and development of pistons for hydrogen fuel engines has entered the experimental stage. In manufacturing, robots and laser detection achieve a tolerance control of ±0.005mm, and 3D printing shortens the R&D cycle by 30% and can also produce complex cooling oil channels. In the future, piston technology will continue to break through, contributing to the green development of the automotive industry.
